Despite a sinking job market for lawyers, pre-law students still rank a school's job placement data at the bottom of the list when it comes to factors influencing their decision where to apply, according to a recent Kaplan Test Prep survey. When asked what factor was most important when choosing a law school, respondents said:
- Law School Rank: 32%
- Geographic location: 22%
- Academic programming: 20%
- Affordability/tuition: 13%
Where do aspiring lawyers want to work? Pre-law students surveyed said they hoped to work in:
- Big Law: 38%
- Public Interest Law: 31%
- Boutique firm: 23%
But with law schools cutting admissions numbers and an uncertain employment landscape, would-be lawyers must examine a host of factors, including a school's job placement data and career services, in determining where to apply and enroll. With fewer jobs in Big Law, pre-law students must also be realistic about the type of job they can land upon graduation.
