An expanding number of laws and tougher guidelines (some new statutes don't require proof of criminal intent) have led to a spike in the number of persons convicted of crimes. According to some sources, the proportion of people sentenced for crimes has doubled in the past 20 years. As a result, the area of criminal law is expanding and the job outlook for criminal lawyers is excellent.

Some offences are created by statutes in larger public interests and in order to promote ‘public welfare’, the normal requirement of ‘mens rea’ or the ‘prohibited state of mind’ or ‘criminal intent or knowledge’ may stand waived.
